Short answer

Start with the trip, not the postcard

Choose the Caribbean for turquoise-water resort and ferry networks, the mainland Pacific for surf towns and varied bays, or Baja for desert-meets-sea landscapes and road-based exploration.

The places to compare

01

Mexican Caribbean

Best fit
Resort choice, islands, reefs and a well-known visitor corridor.
Trade-off
Seaweed, storms and rapid development can change the beach experience.
Move smart
Compare the exact town and beach, then verify current conditions.

02

Mainland Pacific

Best fit
Surf, sunsets, fishing towns and a wider range of local base styles.
Trade-off
Swimming conditions vary dramatically by beach.
Move smart
Select the beach by water use, not appearance alone.

03

Baja California Sur

Best fit
Desert scenery, marine experiences and high-end or road-trip options.
Trade-off
Distances and car dependence are easy to underestimate.
Move smart
Choose one main bay or town and plan marine outings around official conditions.

Choose the region before the beach photograph

A Cancún-area stay, an Oaxaca-Pacific holiday and a Baja itinerary have different gateways and onward journeys. Compare the address, meals, evenings and activities you want, then the transfer back to your actual airport. Do not move a swimming description from one coast to another: surf, tides and local instructions matter at the particular beach. Our archive photographs show places, not today's water conditions. If the coast is only one stage of the holiday, choose a pairing whose transport and usable nights still work.

Decision rules

Use these to break a tie

  1. Season is regional.
  2. A surf beach is not automatically a swimming beach.
  3. Flight convenience cannot replace a good local base.

Before you book

Three checks

  • Check current weather and marine advisories.
  • Use official beach flags and local instructions.
  • Verify airport transfer and night-arrival arrangements.

Useful questions

What travellers usually need to know

Which coast is best without a car?

Specific compact resort or town bases can work; the answer depends more on the chosen locality than the coast.

Which is best for surfing?

The Pacific has many renowned surf bases, but ability and beach conditions must guide the exact choice.

Useful official planning links

Check your dates and journeys with official destination and operator resources. These comparisons are editorial guidance, not hotel inspections, live availability or a safety guarantee.

  • Visit Mexico: official destinations

Use the official destination directory to compare regions. Final neighbourhood choice, local transport and current conditions still need a date-specific check.
